Artificial Propaganda

Hi

This is Jaya Pillai. I am starting off my A to Z blogging. I shall follow no specific theme. My articles will be reflections – thoughts that navigate through my mind.

One of the biggest dangers today is artificial propaganda. It is not confined to the news channels. It happens in our day to day life. If someone speaks loud enough and often enough about a person’s faults , the person will be a proclaimed offender. On the reverse side, put someone on a pedestal often enough, the person will be the cat’s whiskers. What is more of a concern is how the listeners do not show discernment in judging. Or perhaps they are afraid to challenge a loud voiced, powerful person’s opinion.

I was witness to a bit of bullying sometime back. The victim was a pleasant young lady with a good sense of humour. What was most admirable was the way she defended herself . Unfortunately she was castigated for having challenged the bully. No one dared to question the bully.

I think we are gradually growing into a rather spineless society. We talk when we are in a safe zone but dare not speak if our words could land us in some trouble. We love to move with the flow, engage in sycophancy and ignore the voices of dissent within that keep telling us that we aren’t doing the right things by condoning the wrong. It is easy to look the other way when things aren’t going right and this calls for some amount of spunk to acknowledge that the wrong needs to be put right.

Power talks, but goodness backed by courage speaks – and we need to let it be heard often enough. We need to silence the cacophony and let the truth be heard. And for that, we need to strengthen our own moral fibre.
